students new to the country showcased their learning projects and certificates from summer language academy

Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s (NMUSD) Summer Language Academy created a welcoming environment for students new to the country to grow academically and socially while celebrating their diverse cultures in partnership with California State University, Fullerton.

This summer, about 70 secondary students whose primary languages include Farsi, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish participated in the three-week program that blended language instruction with project-based learning. Students strengthened their English reading, writing, and speaking skills while developing meaningful connections with peers.

“The Summer Language Academy is more than just a program where students learn English; it’s a space where students gain confidence, build friendships, and celebrate the richness of their cultures,” said Laura Dale-Pash, Director of Multilingual Programs. “By the end of the three-week session, the students are more connected to their new community.”

The program culminated in a student showcase at Costa Mesa Middle School on August 7, 2025. Families and staff members gathered to experience the students’ artwork, poetry, and reflections on their different backgrounds, interests, and journeys as newcomers.

More than just a student program, the Summer Language Academy also plays a crucial role in the professional development of NMUSD educators. The program equips them with practical strategies for supporting students new to the country to learn English throughout the school year, thereby enhancing the overall educational experience within the district.

As these students step into the new school year, they carry with them not only stronger language skills, but also confidence and connections to help them thrive in their new community.
