Sailor Athletics

The NHHS Athletic Department in association with the NMUSDCIF, the Josephson Institute of Ethics and the community share the goal of teaching the importance of character. All of the athletes at NHHS strive to understand the importance of being a “Person of Character” by living according to the Six Pillars of Character. All of the coaches at NHHS have been trained with the Josephson objectives as noted below:

The Student Athlete at NHHS

  • Is a good person, someone to look up to and admire
  • Knows the difference between right and wrong and always tries to do what is right
  • Sets a good example for everyone
  • Makes the world a better place
  • Lives according to the “Six Pillars of Character”
ATHLETIC CLEARANCE

Newport Harbor High school athletic department is happy to announce that athletic clearances can now be completed online.

We have uploaded all of our clearance forms to the athletic clearance website. This will allow our athletes to do their clearance paperwork from home. Every form can be filled out online and your sports coach will have access to the forms. This will cut down paperwork and allow the coach instant access to their athletes to see where they are in the clearance process. An athlete must be cleared before participating in any sport. Please find instructions and information for athletic clearance linked below.

Thank you for helping us join the future by going digital. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the athletic office at (949)515-6308.

The District’s athletic program shall be free from discrimination and discriminatory practices in accordance with state and federal law. The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that equivalent athletic opportunities are provided for both sexes.

Administrative Regulation (AR) 6145.2 – Athletic Competition outlines the considerations to determine whether equivalent opportunities are available to both sexes, as well as the criteria used to ensure the District’s athletic program effectively accommodates the interests and abilities of both sexes in athletics.

Newport Harbor High School places student safety as our number one priority.  In the unfortunate situation when a student suffers a concussion we immediately implement our Return to Learn Protocol in the classroom and our Return to Play Protocol if a student is involved in our athletic programs.  We all need to be vigilant in our communication with one another.  We cannot implement our protocol if we do not know a concussion has occurred.  Parents  need to communicate with their students counselor immediately and we strongly suggest meeting with a doctor.  A doctor’s note is helpful in guiding us in accommodating your student’s needs.  The counselor will then inform your students teachers and begin to monitor your student’s progress as established by our Return to Learn Protocol.  If you have a student/athlete and the injury is not identified by the trainer/coach/athletic director please follow the same protocol as a non-athlete.   Teachers will work with your student and make accommodations based upon his/her progress.  If symptoms have a prolonged effect on your students classroom performance a student study team may be necessary.

Preventative measures taken by Newport Harbor High School Athletic Program:

  • Parent Notification in Registration Packet: Heads- Up Concussion
  • Every two Years:  Coaches have Concussion Training ((AB1451)-District run on-line

RETURN TO LEARN (RTL)

The two documents below are to assist the concussed student to “return to the classroom and learning environment” in a scientific manner regarding brain activity.

RETURN TO PRACTICE AND PLAY (RTP)

Medical science and concussion care experts have found that a concussed athlete must take a gradual and progressive, stage by stage, step by step return to practice under medical supervision to minimize risks and allow the brain to properly recover.

A.B. 2127 and CIF Bylaws mandated a MINIMUM timeline, but medical experts recognize that many adolescent concussion patients may take much longer to recover.  Always be cautious as returning to practice and play too quickly may have catastrophic consequences.

  • NEW - CIF Concussion Return to Play (RTP) Protocol Form
This form is recommended for use by the CIF Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC)
The CIF Concussion Return to Play Protocol Form is recommended for use by all parties involved with returning a student-athlete to play.

Click here to go to the CIF Website. Find the tab Medicine , then click on concussion for more valuable information regarding concussions.
