National Honor Society

What is the National Honor Society?

Newport Harbor High School’s chapter consists of approximately 40 juniors and seniors.  Students meet bi-weekly during lunch (unless our activities require a weekly meeting) and occasionally outside of school to plan and organize service projects and fundraisers such as the Student-Teacher Basketball Game, Adopt-a-Family, tutoring, graduation water bottle sales, etc.  Members are reviewed in the spring of each year for standards as far as GPA, meeting attendance, service project participation and character.

Each spring, current sophomores and juniors meeting the following criteria are invited to submit an application for membership. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each spring.

Scholarship: A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale is required, including the final grades for the current Spring semester.

Service: A minimum requirement of at least 40 completed service hours on file are required for application.

Leadership and Character: The following will be reviewed and considered by the faculty council: (1) School disciplinary records, (2) Faculty and Community Supervisor Recommendation Forms, and (3) Candidate Information Sheet.

By applying you are accepting the responsibilities set forth in the NHS Constitution including:

  1. Regularly attend meetings
  2. Participate in an individual service project of your creation
  3. Participate in all group service projects and events/fundraisers

Maintain the standards that were the basis for your acceptance
