National Honor Society

What is the National Honor Society?

National Honor Society was founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921 to “recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.” Those four pillars are scholarship, character, service and leadership.

Newport Harbor High School’s chapter consists of approximately 40 juniors and seniors.  Students meet bi-weekly during lunch (unless our activities require a weekly meeting) and occasionally outside of school to plan and organize service projects such as the Student-Teacher Basketball Game, Character Counts Month, fundraising for the group’s charities service with the Orange County Food Bank, final exam tutoring, etc.  Members are reviewed in the spring of each year for standards as far as GPA, meeting attendance, service project participation and character.

Membership in National Honor Society is selective and it honors students with outstanding scholarship, character, service and leadership. The new member process takes place during March and April each year.  Students are notified of their acceptance in May and then are officially inducted into the NHHS chapter in the fall.  Membership is open to NHHS sophomores and juniors that meet the following criteria:

  • Students must have a weighted cumulative (all semesters in high school) minimum GPA of 3.5.

  • Students must complete an essay by the due date.

  • Students must have the student activity information form completely filled out with verification of the community service hours.

  • Students must have positive feedback in all teacher recommendation forms (at least two are required) and have provided at least one community letter of reference.
