National Tests Achievement Data

Every college sets some standard for evaluating prospective students and many require completion of certain high school courses for admission. Students who are in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program submit scores from their AP exams (a score of 3, 4 or 5 are considered passing). Students in the IB (International Baccalaureate)program must receive an average score of 4 on 6 IB exams in order to receive the IB diploma upon graduation. Most colleges also ask students to submit scores from the SAT (students can score a maximum of 800 on each of the 3 sections: Verbal, Writing, and Math), or ACT (students can score a maximum of 36). Both the SAT and ACT are national standardized tests.

State Tests Achievement Data

Each spring, California students in grades 2-11 take a battery of standardized tests that comprise the state's STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) Program. For high schools, the 2 main components of STAR are the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and the California Standards Tests (CSTs).

The CASHEE measures knowledge of basic graduation skills in Mathematics and English. Students will have passed the CAHSEE by scoring 350 or better on each section. The school's goal is to have all students score 350 or better on each section as it is one of the requirements in receiving a high school diploma.

The CSTs measure student achievement of academic content standards in 4 core areas of Mathematics, English, Science and History. Students are ranked in one of 5 quintiles in each core area (Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic, and Far Below Basic). The school's goal is to have all students perform at Advanced or Proficient on each of these core areas.

The Academic Performance Index (API) is a benchmark score given to all schools and districts based primarily on results from the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and the California Standards Tests (CSTs). The API is a single number on a scale of 200 to 1,000 that indicates how well students in our school performed on tests from the previous school year. An API is calculated for the whole school and its numerically significant ethnic subgroups, including socioeconomically disadvantaged students, English Learners and students with disabilities.

Schoolwide Achievement Data

Newport Harbor uses a variety of assessments to measure student achievement and performance. Not only do we pay close attention to the STAR testing results, but we also review classroom achievement in every department. Of particular concern to us is our failure rate, which is monitored closely to ensure we are meeting school goals of maximizing student success. This also includes looking at data on how our EL (English Learner) population is achieving in comparison to our non-EL population.

School Learning Environment Data

Newport Harbor has been cited by school accreditation teams as having a positive school environment. One of our primary goals is to create an environment where students feel comfortable, valued, accepted, and secure.

Research has consistently shown a link between good school climate and other important measurements of school success including academic achievement, positive morale, staff productivity, and effective management.

Newport Harbor monitors school climate by focusing on those components that contribute directly. Attendance, expulsion and suspension rates are just a few indicators our staff monitors on a regular basis.
