Sunset League Sportsmanship Conference 2014
SUNSET LEAGUE SPORTSMANSHIP CONFERENCE SUMMARY
On Monday, September 22, 2014, 30 of our Student Athletes joined student athletes from the other five schools in the Sunset League at Marina High School for the First Annual Sunset League Sportsmanship Conference. The theme of the gathering was how to be better teammates through sportsmanship, interaction and communication.
CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod opened up the festivities explaining the reasons why Pursuing Victory with Honor and practicing good sportsmanship are so important in high school athletics. He challenged the 180+ student athletes to serve as leaders not only at their individual schools, but within their non-league and Sunset League schedules as well.
The keynote speaker was Jerry Dipoto, General Manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Mr. Dipoto spoke of his career in Major League baseball and the importance of being a good teammate. He explained that most of the memories that the students will take from their high school athletic careers will be the relationships that are built within the teams the students play on and the life lessons learned through their participation in athletics. Mr. Dipoto went on to answer many questions and was a true inspiration for all in attendance.
Finally, Keith Hawkins, a local motivational speaker, rallied the students in several activities that had them involved, engaged and engrossed. His message was simple; Strive for excellence, and we will realize our goal of changing lives and ultimately changing the world.
All in all the Conference was considered a huge success, not only by the staffs of the six Sunset League Schools, but more importantly, the student athletes who attended. A very special THANK YOU goes out to Marina H.S. for hosting the event and doing such a great job organizing and coordinating the proceedings. We look forward to trying to make next years’ conference even better.
